Eriksen, who has built a good midfield partnership with Casemiro since joining United as a free agent in the summer, was taken off after a hefty challenge from Andy Carroll early in the second half.

Fans’ video footage taken while Eriksen was leaving Old Trafford after the game and published on social media revealed that he needed crutches.

Ten Hag was unable to provide any definite updates following the game, just stating that it was an ankle issue. Given the extent of the problem, United will have to wait until at least Sunday night to learn more and determine how long the recovery would take.

“It’s always difficult to say at this time, so soon after the game,” Ten Hag said. “But it’s an ankle problem,” she says. We have to wait a least 24 hours to find out what the diagnosis is, and then I can say more.”

Eriksen, who has been a frequent target for United throughout his career, has given balance to the club as a deep playmaker. So far in 19 Premier League games, the 30-year-old has seven assists.

With back-to-back games against Leeds and Barcelona on the horizon, as well as a trip to Anfield on 5 Match, United staff and fans will be hoping for a brief absence.
