The president of Barcelona has conceded that the club has to clarify the issue with Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong.

Erik ten Hag named De Jong his top objective this summer, and United agreed to a €55 million fee with Barcelona two weeks ago. The wage deferral De Jong agreed to as part of a contract renewal in 2020, however, has put the accord on hold.

Barcelona has been experiencing financial challenges for some time, which were compounded by Covid-19. De Jong took a wage reduction to assist the club during the pandemic, with the understanding that he would earn that money back over the next couple of seasons, which means that if he were to leave this summer, he would still be owed the money he is promised.

Barcelona has stated that they do not desire to sell, and the player has stated that he wishes to remain. United, on the other hand, is still interested in De Jong, and Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough were in Barcelona last week.

Since United’s executives visited him, De Jong has been on a pre-season tour with Barcelona. That means the transfer saga will continue, as Barcelona president Joan Laporta discussed the deal on Saturday night.

“Frenkie de Jong is our player, and we like him a lot,” Laporta told ESPN. “We had some offers for Frenkie, but we have yet to accept because we want to meet with him and find out exactly what he wants. We need to explain some details about his predicament “.

On August 7, United will kick off the new Premier League season against Brighton.

The transfer window for Premier League clubs will close on September 1 at 23:00 BST.
