According to today’s edition of Sport (news image supplied below), the Red Devils are waiting for talks between Barcelona and De Jong to completely collapse before attempting to persuade the midfielder.

According to the Spanish press, Manchester United is willing to spend more than 80 million euros (£68 million) for the former Ajax player’s services.

Barcelona has informed the 25-year-old that he must return to his former contract and accept a 50% wage drop in order to remain at the Nou Camp.

If he disagrees, Barcelona will do all in their power to unload him to United or Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

The two Premier League clubs “respect” De Jong’s present contract with the Blaugrana and are willing to provide large salary to ensure that he does not lose money.

For the time being, the pressure is on De Jong, who is angry but still wants to continue with Barcelona. The Dutchman must make a decision quickly.

Man United and Chelsea are both waiting for the final decision before stepping in to sign him. Keep an eye on this space for the most recent changes.
