Erik Ten Hag’s team was strong in Texas, with Mainoo the only player who could not plausibly claim to have been a regular first-team starter for his club the previous season.
The manager made sweeping changes in the second half, but United were unable to produce an equalizer, and Joselu sealed Madrid’s victory late on.
