Several Manchester United fans slammed VAR after Marcus Rashford was denied his fourth Premier League goal of the season in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

The England international, who came off the bench to score twice in the Reds’ 3-2 Europa League triumph against Omonia Nicosia on Thursday night, felt he had capped off a good away performance from Erik ten Hag’s side with only ten minutes of normal time remaining. The attacker raced Everton defender Seamus Coleman to a loose ball, rounded Jordan Pickford, and stroked the ball into an empty net to give United a 3-1 lead.

However, after sprinting away to celebrate in front of the traveling United supporters who had made the short journey along the M62, the goal was disallowed for handball. Rashford was adjudged to have touched the ball when it rebounded into his path after colliding with Coleman.

It appeared to be a severe decision, yet it was correct to be banned in accordance with the rules of the game. Any attacking player who handles the ball in the build-up to a goal will have it ruled out, even if it was unintentional.

It was a tremendous setback for Rashford, who felt he had secured a well-deserved three points for Ten Hag’s side, who had turned the game on its head in the first half with goals from Antony and substitute Cristiano Ronaldo. Unsurprisingly, United fans were outraged by the decision.

Former Premier League referee Peter Walton told BT Sport on the disallowed goal: “It will be disallowed because the law states that if a goalkeeper hands the ball, the goal should be ruled out. In this case, it was an unintentional handball, but the goal was chalked off.”
