Erik ten Hag believes he is hoping for enthusiasm from his team after sitting out Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire against Liverpool.

United host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Monday night, with both teams still looking for their first Premier League victory of the season.

Ten Hag’s side lost at home to Brighton before being beaten by Brentford, while Liverpool was held to draws by Fulham and Crystal Palace.

A win on Monday night might be the spark for either team to rediscover their form and relaunch their season, and Ten Hag has put his faith in Anthony Elanga and Raphael Varane to do so.

Prior to the game, the Dutchman described his United lineup and why he chose a fluid forward line.

“We know Liverpool is a tremendously talented team, and you have to press them,” he said before the game to BBC Sport. “You need the energy to do that out of a block, which is why we went with Rashford, Sancho, and Elanga.”

When asked about dropping the club captain, Maguire, he said, “Varane is a very experienced player, won everything, and will bring communication in the back four.” In the back four, we want mobility and agility.”
