Man Utd stars have ‘lost trust’ in Andre Onana as Peter Schmeichel gives damning verdict

Onana’s tenure with United has been far from ideal since his £47.2 million transfer from Inter Milan in the summer. The Cameroon international has been in the spotlight due to a series of notable mistakes, and his latest blunder allowed Brentford to open the scoring in Saturday’s thrilling match at Old Trafford.

While a late brace from Scott McTominay saved the day for United, it didn’t spare Onana from further scrutiny. Schmeichel, a revered figure at the club, disclosed that he had reached out to the 27-year-old following his recent poor performances.

Acknowledging that Onana had “not covered himself in glory” during Brentford’s goal, Schmeichel told Premier League Productions: “I think a lot of that [Onana’s mistakes] is pressure. I spoke to him after Bayern. I spoke to him after Galatasaray as well, and he was very down about the mistakes he made.

“I’m trying to speak to him about what it’s like being at Manchester United and why, no matter the mistakes you’ve made, you have to compartmentalize them and set them aside. If you make an error during the game, it may be one we notice, or it might be one that goes unnoticed.

“But you should wait to reflect on it and analyze it after the game, or later on. You must be ready for the next moment. If you’re not, you’ll commit another mistake. Unfortunately, he has now unsettled the entire team. They will trust him even less, and that’s not a good situation.”

Onana has only managed to keep three clean sheets in his first 11 appearances for Manchester United, and his performances have left fans unimpressed. He was brought in to replace the long-serving No.1, David de Gea, who also made several costly errors last season.

Erik ten Hag, the United manager, defended Onana following their recent 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League and affirmed his faith in the new No.1.

Ten Hag stated: “We are content with our goalkeeping group, especially with Andre. He reached the semi-finals of the Champions League before, and last season he played in a Champions League final. He possesses the qualities to become one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

“He has demonstrated that, and he will continue to do so. In previous games, we have seen his exceptional abilities, as well as his resilience after making a mistake. He will bounce back, and I’m confident he will do so in the upcoming matches as well.”
