Erik ten Hag is exploring a much smaller pool of attackers to bolster Manchester United’s attack.

Rasmus Hojlund, a 20-year-old Danish forward for Atalanta, is high on the Dutchman’s list of targets.

And United has given the Italians something that could be a game-changer in discussions.

Ten Hag is willing to allow a year-long loan move for Atalanta winger Amad Diallo, who was sold to United for £19 million in January 2021.

Diallo had a solid season in the Championship with Sunderland, with teammate Luke O’Nien calling him “incredible,” but ten Hag may be unable to find a place for him at Old Trafford next season.

United is also interested in Frankfurt’s French international Randal Kolo Muani, as well as Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos.

Napoli’s pricey Nigerian hitman Victor Osimhen is still in the mix, with United still interested in Harry Kane despite the apparent challenges in luring him away from Tottenham and tough-negotiating chairman Daniel Levy.

Last month, United scouts were also seen at Lille’s final two home games of the season, with Canadian international attacker Jonathan David being the focus.

The 23-year-old New Yorker did not disappoint either, scoring three goals against Marseille and Nantes.

Despite scoring 25 goals in 36 appearances for Lille the previous season, David, at 5 ft 9 quick, lacks the physicality ten Hag seeks in a new number 9.

But, with Anthony Martial and Anthony Elanga potentially leaving and Wout Weghorst returning to Burnley after a loan spell, ten Hag knows he’ll need at least two strikers if that scenario plays out.

Ten Hag’s hardest challenge may be keeping his ambitions and dreams alive.

With the likelihood of Qatari billionaire Sheikh Jassim taking over at Old Trafford growing, and the Glazer family, the club’s present owners, nearing a decision, anticipation has skyrocketed.

And that has put Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe squarely in the mix of superstar strikers United fans want.

Mbappe will be a free agent next year after refusing to extend his contract with PSG.

Mbappe’s first preference is Real Madrid. Any deal for the 24-year-old, though, will be exorbitant – possibly beyond Madrid’s reach.

And this has United fans daydreaming.
