The Manchester United skipper threw away a penalty to allow Ilkay Gundogan to put the Germans 1-0 up and then mismanaged possession for Kai Havertz to increase the visitors’ lead.

Maguire came to Instagram after the match to apologise for his blunder and it follows calls for the defender to be pulled from the England starting XI before the World Cup.

Erik ten Hag dropped Maguire after United lost their first two fixtures of the season and United have won four on the bounce since the Dutchman’s decision.

Part of Southgate’s decision to pick Maguire was down to the fact that he’s been out of favour at Old Trafford.

However, the decision proved expensive as Maguire made a mistake for Germany’s opener and subsequently injured his hamstring.

Kane, though, has supported his team-mate and claimed the defender played on ‘one leg’ in the final stages because of his injury.

‘Any individual error, you’re going to be gutted. But we are a team, we will get behind each other,’ Kane said.

‘They will learn from it and they’ll go on. Every time they put on the shirt, they have been fantastic for us.

‘H [Maguire] had a very bad injury there at the end, where he played further five, 10 minutes, on nearly one leg.

‘Great character from him, I’m really proud of him for that.’
