Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to bring in a new right-back to help Jadon Sancho reach his full potential at Old Trafford. The former Manchester United and England midfielder believes Sancho would benefit from a more attacking right-back, something he had at Borussia Dortmund with Achraf Hakimi and Thomas Meunier.

Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are still competing for a place in Erik ten Hag’s side, but a new right-back could still be on the agenda in the transfer window.

Both full-backs prefer the defensive side of the game, and with Denzel Dumfries and Jeremie Frimpong among those being considered, Scholes believes Sancho could really take off if the right flank changes.

Scholes remarked on BT Sport when asked if Sancho has done enough this season: “Not yet, I don’t believe; I believe he has a lot more to offer.

“He definitely had troubles and concerns that the manager dealt with, but he returned and scored a couple of goals.

“I still believe there is a player in there; he just needs the proper teammates.

“Remember how he had a flying right-back going on all the time at Dortmund? It really helped him because he’s not a quick player; he’s more of a skillful player who wants to play football with his center-forward and right-back.

“If United can find a better right-back, he might be a different prospect.”

Wan-recent Bissaka’s turnaround has reduced United’s need for a new right-back. It is understood that the position is no longer at the top of the club’s priority list, though the club could still move in the market if one of its current options is sold.

United have the option to extend Dalot’s contract for another season, but they are hoping to entice the Portugal international to sign a new contract.

Meanwhile, Wan-Bissaka has plenty of admirers in West Ham, Wolves, and Crystal Palace, but he has shown tenacity in recent months in fighting for his place.

Sancho is struggling to make an impact at Old Trafford, and he was released at the end of last season, instead traveling to Holland to complete a personal fitness program.

The England international has enjoyed the benefits of his efforts, making an immediate impact upon his return to the United squad.

But, Sancho’s form has deteriorated since then, and supporters are concerned that he is struggling to deliver consistently for the Red Devils.

Sancho has five goals in all competitions this season, although his totals have dipped significantly since his time with Dortmund in Germany.

Ten Hag recently impressed with his play as United’s No.10 in the unfortunate 0-0 draw with Southampton.

“I think he did really well as a number ten,” the Dutchman added.

“He did the same thing against Barcelona and Leicester. He was decisive against Leicester and again today with some excellent efforts. He came dangerously close to scoring once with a run at the defending line and a cross to Bruno. He performed a good job.”
