Malacia, a Dutch international, started the first two games of the season on the bench for United, but after an impressive cameo in the second half of a hammering by Brentford in August, he supplanted Shaw in the starting lineup for the next five league games.

However, he struggled to deal with Manchester City’s Phil Foden’s danger in the first half of the derby earlier this month and was substituted by Shaw at halftime. Shaw has started all four of United’s league games since.

Shaw emphasized the importance of the duo’s competition while also discussing their off-the-field connection.

“It’s about staying fit and maintaining that high level consistently,” Shaw told club media. Tyrell has clearly been playing and playing very well, and I think that’s great for the manager to have competition in different areas and both of us performing at a high level.

“I like Ty; I sit next to him in the locker room, and he’s a really lovely guy and a really talented athlete.” He’s still very young, and we get along pretty well, which is wonderful for both of us because it’s nice to get along with someone in your position. That is extremely beneficial because, when he plays, I want him to perform his best for the team, and I know he feels the same way about me.”
