Not Dalot or Fred – Man Utd hero Paul Scholes wants Erik ten Hag to drop two stars after Real Betis win

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has counseled Erik ten Hag on team selection.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has advised Erik ten Hag to rest Luke Shaw and Casemiro for the return leg against Real Betis on Thursday after the Red Devils won handily in their Europa League last-16 tie. The Red Devils won 4-1 at Old Trafford to go to the quarter-finals, and Scholes believes the return will be an ideal moment for Ten Hag to rotate his players.

With a strong second-half performance, the Red Devils bounced back from their 7-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool with a statement win against La Liga side Betis. Marcus Rashford had put the hosts ahead before Ayoze Perez’s superb equalizer.

Nevertheless, goals from Antony and Bruno Fernandes – two players strongly chastised in the Anfield defeat – put United in command before Wout Weghorst completed the onslaught late on to secure a morale-boosting victory for Ten Hag’s side.

Scholes singled out Luke Shaw and Casemiro’s stale performances, with the former being replaced late in the second half, and believes the pair might benefit from a rest now that United are almost certain to make the final eight.

Scholes told BT Sport after the game that Facundo Pellistri may start the game in Seville following an eye-catching cameo: “Yes, I’m sure he could.

Ten Hag was overjoyed with his team’s response after slamming them as “unprofessional” only five days prior. United cruised to win in the second half.

“I think we played extremely well in both half. “We could have been ahead 3-0 at halftime, but we made one mistake, therefore it’s 1-1,” Ten Hag told BT Sport after the game.

“We scored some nice goals, we gave the supporters something to support and they gave it back so we are extremely grateful. We played well on the ball, made fantastic changes and runs in behind, and generated a number of chances.”

United travel to the Benito Villamarin with a 4-1 lead, and Ten Hag is anticipated to rest his key players ahead of their FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham three days later.
