Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will have one wish for the World Cup final

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United will square off in the World Cup final between Argentina and France.

Since Erik ten Hag’s hiring as Manchester United manager, one obvious improvement in the squad has been how the club defends.

Part of this is due to Ten Hag’s efforts to get the club to defend as a unit and respond to attacks in a much more disciplined manner, but the defensive duo of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane deserves credit as well.

Martinez was signed by Ajax in the summer and has instantly become a fan favorite for his talent as well as his never-say-die mentality. Varane, on the other hand, appears to have overcome the majority of the injury issues that plagued him during his first season and is now playing alongside the Argentinian.

Their surprising chemistry is one of the primary reasons for their success. Both players appear like they’ve been playing with one other for years and have an understanding of each others’ games that would come with it.

Martinez consoled Varane after he suffered an injury that he thought would keep him out of the World Cup. It’s a priceless bond. Ten Hag will be praying that the World Cup final does not derail his plans.

France and Argentina face in the competition final on Sunday, and as fans know, these scenarios may get extremely hot. Varane is anticipated to start for France, while Martinez is expected to be on the bench unless Lionel Scaloni switches to a back-three system.

There will be a loser, and they will be dissatisfied. Normally, players would have a month or two to mentally recover before returning for pre-season; this year, players are being thrust right back into the mix, with United’s first match against Burnley on December 21st.

Martinez and Varane are unlikely to participate in that game, although United returns to the Premier League on December 27 with an away trip to Wolves.

Hopefully, by the time that game comes around, Varane and Martinez will be both available and ready to play together, because if United wants to finish in the top four at the conclusion of the season, this stretch of games will be as important as ever.
