Manchester United got off to a flying start in the preseason, thrashing Liverpool 4-0 in their first game under Erik ten Hag at Bangkok’s Rajamangala National Stadium.

The Reds, who conceded nine goals against Liverpool in the Premier League last season, led 3-0 at halftime thanks to strikes from Jadon Sancho, Fred, and Anthony Martial. Ten Hag, in keeping with pre-season custom, made a slew of changes at halftime, replacing everyone but goalkeeper David de Gea.

As a result, United’s second-half lineup included a slew of peripheral players and rookies hoping to make an impression on the new boss. Liverpool, on the other hand, looked a lot more familiar after the interval, with Andy Robertson, Thiago, Fabinho, and Mohamed Salah all coming off the bench.

United didn’t have the same zip and intensity in the second half, but they did score a fourth goal in the final 15 minutes, with youngster Facundo Pellistri tapping home from close range. The Uruguayan connected with Amad’s cut-back and made no mistake in stroking the ball past Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian, who had already been substituted for Alisson.

Despite the fact that Pellistri scored, the mobility and involvement of Eric Bailly was the most outstanding aspect of the goal. The Ivorian picked up the ball deep inside his own half, danced past Thiago, slipped the ball wide to Pellistri while continuing his run, then sprinted the whole length of the field before coming within a whisker of scoring himself.

Instead, Pellistri made sure he tucked the ball away after Amad’s assist, but Bailly’s contribution to the goal was outstanding. Surprisingly, it elicited an immediate response on social media.
