Lisandro Martinez’s debut season at Manchester United may end sooner than expected. The Argentina international was stretchered off during his team’s 2-2 Europa League draw with Sevilla. Erik ten Hag has now revealed three possible replacements for the 25-year-old.
Martinez went down unopposed near the conclusion of normal time, and United collapsed late on after blowing a 2-0 lead.
And he was visibly upset as he was brought from the field of play, with Argentina officials clearly anticipating the worst.
Ten Hag stated after the game that the 25-year-old’s situation ‘doesn’t seem great,’ but insisted his star performer hadn’t hurt his achilles.
“We saw Licha Martinez drop out after a moment,” the Dutchman explained.
“Because there was no opponent, it doesn’t look promising, so we’ll have to wait.”
“I can’t say what it is right now, like Rapha [Varane].” I believe it is for after the game, but that ailment is something he has complained about in recent weeks, so we’ll see how it goes.”
And Ten Hag believes that if Martinez is forced to sit out, players like Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Luke Shaw can step in.
“We have very good replacements,” he continued.
“Harry Potter, Victor Lindelof, and Luke Shaw.” We have players who can take their place. Of course, it’s a miss.
“We have three competitions, and then you need the squad.”
“And if Licha Martinez and Rapha Varane are unavailable on Sunday, it will be up to others to do it.”
“And, as we saw on Saturday, Harry Maguire played well.” And he came in tonight, and I thought he had a very excellent game as well.”
Ten Hag also stated that he spoke with Martinez and that the defender was ‘cool’ rather than concerned in the locker room following the game.
“I spoke with him, and he is fine and calm,” he said.
“I believe it is an injury, so he will not play on Sunday.” I’m not sure what the diagnosis is. I’d rather wait and find out what it is.”
Maguire appears to be the favorite to start, with the Manchester United star gaining accolades from his manager for his recent performances.
Lindelof is another useful option, with the Sweden international having played at the club since 2017.
Shaw, although being a left-back by trade, has performed admirably at centre-back at times this season.
While United were dissatisfied with the result, Sevilla manager Jose Luis Mendilibar commended his team for their tenacity.
“The first half hour was a tough period, but then we recomposed ourselves,” he remarked.
“We didn’t throw away the game, and we never gave up.” In this competition, everyone respects Sevilla.”
On Sunday (4.30 p.m.), United will face Nottingham Forest.
When the match takes place at the City Ground, they will be looking for their fourth win of the season over Steve Cooper’s team.
United triumphed 3-0 in the Premier League in December before defeating Forest 3-0 in the Carabao Cup.
They also battled to a 2-0 victory in the second leg of the cup contest in February.
Sevilla’s next match is against Valencia on Sunday (8 p.m.).
