If Harry Maguire remains a Manchester United player, Erik ten Hag is unlikely to sign Benjamin Pavard from Bayern Munich.

Maguire’s potential move to West Ham has been halted because United are unable to reach an agreement with the Englishman, who has two years left on his contract. He is presently paid roughly £190,000 per week, and the Hammers are hesitant to match that figure. As a result, in order for the move to proceed, United will need to reach an agreement with the 30-year-old or continue to pay a portion of his income. He is thought to be due £10 million in pay.

Ten Hag is content for Maguire to remain at Old Trafford and compete for a starting spot, delaying Pavard’s potential transfer. United are believed to have held conversations with the 27-year-old France international, but are unable to afford him unless there are initial outgoings.

West Ham has made a £30 million proposal for Maguire, who is willing to make the move if his wages are paid. Pavard is in the final year of his contract and is expected to be available for between £30m and £35m.

Pavard is rumored to be interested in joining Ten Hag’s team. The World Cup champion used the flame emoji in response to an image on Instagram of Raphael Varane’s winner for Manchester United against Wolves on Monday night, fueling conjecture. There is still a chance that Maguire’s deal to West Ham will be resurrected. The Hammers, though, are not waiting for the defender and are looking at other options.

Maguire, who is still a regular at international level, might possibly be pursued by another Premier League club. He will, however, need to play more consistently if he is to make Gareth Southgate’s England side for the Euros in Germany next year.

Maguire started just eight Premier League games last season and was an unused replacement in Wolves’ 1-0 win. Since Ten Hag stripped him of the leadership earlier this summer, the centre-back’s future at Old Trafford has been in doubt.

Ten Hag talked on Maguire’s future before the Wolves game. “That is exactly how I described it to Harry,” he said. He must struggle for his position. He has the potential to be a world-class center-back, and if he is the best for England, why shouldn’t he be the best for us?

“But he must prove it.” When he lacks the confidence to fight, he must go. Then he must make a decision, but I am content with him.”

West Ham boss David Moyes was recently asked about Maguire’s desire to join the club. “We’ve had a bid accepted from Manchester United,” added the Scot, “but while he’s not our player, I’m not in a position to discuss him really.”
