The 20-year-old midfielder joined the Black Cats late in the summer transfer window and has flourished under Mowbray’s tutelage at the Stadium of Light.
Amad has seven goals and three assists in 28 appearances for the Championship team, often having a game-winning influence.
Erik ten Hag chose not to recall the forward in January, much to the delight of Sunderland fans.
Speaking to FLW after the Black Cats’ 3-0 win over QPR on Tuesday, Mowbray waxed lyrical about some of the offensive players at the North East club and questioned how they’d managed to sign the Ivory Coast international.
“I’ll never understand how Patrick Roberts was playing in League One,” he stated. This young man is a Premier League footballer who was formerly playing in League One.
“Amad Diallo, how on earth we got him on loan is unbelievable because he is like a wizard. We have some fantastic players.
“From Leeds United, Tottenham paid £10 million for Jack Clarke. We have some incredibly good footballers who simply needed to be loved and told how fantastic they were, and they are just blossoming into the players I know they are.
“We can hurt teams in this division at the top end of the pitch.”
United has also benefited from the loan spell. Before joining Sunderland, he’d made little impression at the first-team level and had a disastrous loan experience at Rangers so there were question marks about whether the young attacker had what it takes to prosper at Old Trafford.
His performances in the Championship have demonstrated why the Red Devils paid a high price to sign him from Atalanta as an 18-year-old, and he will have many Premier League clubs intrigued about what he may bring in the future.
