The Italian team is determined to complete the transaction, although other European clubs are still interested. Olympiacos has also looked into a trade, while Besiktas has considered a loan after United made him available.

Greenwood will have the final say, but time is running short to reach an agreement. After closing an internal investigation, the Red Devils confirmed that they will assist the forward in completing a move away from the club this summer.

“All those involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties with him resuming his career at Manchester United,” according to an official statement from the club. As a result, it has been mutually agreed that he should do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that goal.”

It now appears that a move to Serie A is on the cards. According to different Italian media sources, Lazio were first offered the chance to sign Greenwood before the transfer window closed.

It was reported that they will take him on a free transfer from Manchester United, and he is willing to travel to the Stadio Olimpico, but a loan move now appears more plausible. Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is now in charge of the decision.

If Greenwood joins Lazio, he will face up against club legend Ciro Immobile. A move would also mean the end of the academy graduate’s time at Old Trafford.

Before being arrested in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior, the 21-year-old had made 129 appearances for United and scored 35 goals. As a result, he was suspended by the Red Devils. Those charges were eventually withdrawn.

He now appears to be prepared to continue his career in Italy. If a deal is reached, it looks unlikely that he will make his debut very soon. On Saturday evening, Lazio will face reigning Italian champions Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Domestic football in Italy then comes to a halt in preparation for the impending international break. Greenwood now has one cap after making his England debut under Gareth Southgate in September 2020.

During his most recent squad announcement, the Three Lions manager was asked about Greenwood’s future and confirmed that the striker was not being considered for the time being. “It’s clearly a very complex case,” he remarked at a press conference. He’s not playing, so it’s not a factor for us. It’s speculative. Honestly, whatever I say will be used in a less sophisticated manner.”
