The club has made the signing of the Madrid star their main objective after a summer of frustrating signings. The club are desperate for a holding midfielder with less than two weeks to go in the transfer window.

United officials are reportedly already in talks with Madrid to fast-track the signing of the Brazil international, who has won 18 trophies during a glittering career in the Spanish capital, including three La Liga titles and five Champions Leagues. Casemiro will become one of United’s top earners.

The 30-year-old is set to join Old Trafford in the coming days as the club finalise their fourth signing of the summer. New manager Erik ten Hag has already secured the signatures of defenders Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez from Feyenoord and Ajax respectively, as well as acquiring free agent Christian Eriksen.

However, the signing of a deep-lying midfielder has been the club’s priority all summer, following the departure of Nemanja Matic this summer and the need to improve the position in the long term. Deals were made with Barcelona and Juventus for Frenkie de Jong and Adrien Rabiot, but neither came to fruition.

The deal for Casemiro is gathering pace and all parties expect the signing to be finalised in the next few days, although it is not yet clear whether the Brazil international will be signed and registered in time for United’s game against Liverpool on Monday.

The player’s mother has let slip on social media that her son is close to signing for the Premier League club, as she began following United on her Instagram account amid reports that movement is gathering pace.

United are hoping Casemiro will lead a late arrival at Old Trafford in the final weeks of the transfer window. A £67m bid was tabled for the Ajax striker, but the Dutch giants rejected it. Cody Gakpo (PSV Eindhoven) is an alternative in attack.

The club also hopes to sign a new goalkeeper to compete with the out-of-form David De Gea. They are also keen to recruit a new right-back, although this is linked to the future of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who could return to Crystal Palace this summer.
