United confirmed the agreement with Ajax on Sunday, although the transfer is still subject to medical, personal terms, and UK visa requirements.

It is initially worth £49 million, with an additional £9 million in add-ons. Martinez will be the club’s second most expensive defender, behind only Harry Maguire and ahead of Raphael Varane and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Ten Hag was in charge of Martinez’s development at Ajax when he first went to Amsterdam in 2019 and has observed his progress over the last few years.

“He’s a warrior, and I believe the fans will respect him.” “He has a battling spirit and an attitude,” the manager told ManUtd.com. “He adds aggressiveness to the game in a positive way.” That, I believe, is required. But he’s also skilled, has good ball control, and is left-footed.”

Argentine players have historically been popular among United fans. Juan Sebastian Veron, Gabriel Heinze, and Carlos Tevez all became cult icons at Old Trafford, however, the latter two went with a cloud over their heads due to the way in which they left.

Marcos Rojo has been less successful in recent years, while Sergio Romero has been a competent understudy to David de Gea.
