Erik ten Hag delivers Bruno Fernandes injury update ahead of Tottenham vs Man United

Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United suffered an ankle injury over the weekend and is questionable for Thursday's match against Tottenham.

Bruno Fernandes is a doubt for Manchester United’s Premier League match against Tottenham on Thursday, according to Erik ten Hag. The versatile midfielder was substituted in extra time of United’s FA Cup semi-final penalty shootout triumph over Brighton, and ice was later seen strapped to his ankle as a result of his withdrawal.

United and Tottenham had quite different weekends, with the Lilywhites being thrashed 6-1 by Newcastle, forcing interim manager Cristian Stellini to resign. Ryan Mason will take command until the end of the season for the second time in two years, having also replaced Jose Mourinho after he was fired in 2019.

One thing the two clubs have in common is that both sustained injuries over the weekend, with Spurs captain Hugo Lloris being substituted at halftime. Mason stated in his news conference on Wednesday that he was doubtful if the Frenchman would be fit to play, while Clement Lenglet and Ben Davies, who both came off the bench against Newcastle, will be assessed in training.

United have also suffered significant defensive injuries, with Lisandro Martinez out for the season and Raphael Varane slated to miss at least another month. While ten Hag’s team has mainly survived without their first-choice centre-back partnership, despite their humiliating Europa League loss, the Red Devils may suffer as a result of Fernandes’ absence.

The wife of the Portugal international shared a snapshot of Fernandes resting his foot with a boot and crutches alongside him. Despite the fact that this appears to indicate he will be absent, ten Hag did not rule him out of the game during his news conference prior to the game.

“We’ll have to wait and see how Bruno Fernandes is. “He’s a question mark,” he explained. Fernandes’ availability is thus unknown, but his absence would be a huge setback to United, who have struggled for midfield balance without him in the lineup.
