What exactly is the word?
The transfer guru turned to Twitter to debunk reports that Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag was close to completing a deal for the FC Barcelona midfielder.

“Despite new Manchester United rumors, nothing has changed about Frenkie de Jong,” Romano stated. The scenario is still the same as it was last summer.

“No new talks, his attention is on Barça as of today. And… Chelsea, not just Manchester United, wanted Frankie.”

With Chelsea also interested in the ace, it is critical that United act first and persuade the maestro into a lucrative move to Old Trafford, where the club is entering a new era.

United is required to sign.
De Jong joined Barcelona from AFC Ajax in 2019 for a reported £65 million, and he has gone on to make 157 appearances, scoring 15 goals, dishing 19 assists, and winning the Copa del Rey.

However, with La Blaugrana facing significant financial difficulties, the 50-cap Dutchman was subject to heavy transfer interest from Manchester United last summer, with a deal falling through despite the constant intensity of the reports.

Indeed, the trade was so close to completion at one point that Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg tweeted: “Ten Hag wants him, he will get him!” De Jong is on his way to joining MUFC!”

Despite agreeing to a sum of £72 million, the Red Devils were out, with the failure to qualify for the Champions League being a major factor.

But, with Ten Hag at the helm and a new attitude at the club, the tide may have reversed in favor of United, who might attract the midfielder with a sizable offer.

And, with three points separating them from the top four and a game in hand, United are well placed to make a more tempting offer to the Spanish giants.

The phenom, described as “amazing” by recently-departed Netherlands manager Louis Van Gaal, would bring a slew of qualities to the United midfield and propel them to the next level, competing for success in the Champions League and edging closer to a Premier League title fight.

In doing so, they would jeopardize Chelsea’s chances, as the Blues are in desperate need of a world-class central midfielder, with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante both scheduled to expire at the end of the season.

He would be a signing in the mold of Luka Modric, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner and someone De Jong has most likely been closely watching throughout his career, extracting pieces of his game and incorporating them into his own.

Indeed, with Jamie Redknapp comparing him to “Modric,” it’s evident that he’d make a significant influence on the United ship, bringing an elite mentality and innate level of passing that is rarely seen in the Premier League.

According to FBref, the 25-year-old ranks in the top 8% for pass completion, 16% for progressive passes, and 14% for dribbles completed, while Modric ranks in the top 15% for pass success, 4% for progressive passes, and 35% for dribbles completed, highlighting their similarities and the type of transitional powers De Jong would instill in the Theatre of Dreams.
