Lisandro Martinez, the Argentine star, had to watch Manchester United’s Champions League match against Galatasaray from home while wearing a protective boot as he awaits surgery for his foot injury.

This injury initially occurred when Martinez fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during a Europa League quarter-final first-leg match against Sevilla in April. Despite his return in pre-season and recent regular appearances, he experienced a recurrence of the injury during a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal before the international break.

Martinez displayed immense determination by playing through the pain against Brighton and Bayern Munich. However, he has been sidelined for all of Manchester United’s matches since then. Manager Erik ten Hag confirmed earlier this week that Martinez would need additional surgery, expressing his regret for the player’s situation.

Ten Hag stated, “He has to go through the same process, and I’m really sorry for him.” Martinez, meanwhile, watched the match against Galatasaray from home and shared a picture on his Instagram story, revealing his right foot in a protective boot resting on a cushion.

Manchester United has not yet provided a precise timeline for Martinez’s recovery, only stating that he will be out for an extended period. Last week, Ten Hag acknowledged that an issue had been identified with the injured area, necessitating further treatment.

“We did a thorough diagnosis, both in Argentina and here,” Ten Hag explained. “But now it has been revealed that there was a problem, which is very unfortunate for him and the team because he was not at 100 percent fitness.”

Ten Hag also emphasized the significant impact Martinez has on the team’s performance levels, noting that the recent Martinez was not performing at the same level as he did in his first season at Manchester United. Losing a key contributor like Martinez can lower the overall performance levels of the team.
