Sir Alex Ferguson has already lauded Christian Eriksen, and the Danish playmaker has a verbal agreement to join Manchester United this summer.

Eriksen, 30, returned to the Premier League in January after leaving Inter Milan, signing a short-term contract with Brentford. Given that he is now a free agent, his performances have gotten a lot of attention. The Bees had wanted to keep him, but he has accepted a three-year contract with Manchester United.

Eriksen spent just under seven years at Tottenham before joining the Nerazzurri in the January transfer window of 2020. Eriksen suffered a devastating on-field cardiac collapse at Euro 2020 18 months later, jeopardizing his entire football career.

Surprisingly, the midfielder was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and was back in action six months later when Brentford gave him the opportunity to prove he could still play at the highest level. He took the opportunity with both hands, as he was easily the Bees’ finest player from January onwards last season, alerting Europe’s leading clubs in the process.

Eriksen, however, originally caught United’s attention a decade ago, when he impressed for Ajax in a Europa League match against the Red Devils in 2012. Ferguson was still in charge at Old Trafford at the time, and he praised the Danish sensation and his potential as a player.

Ferguson explained Eriksen to TV3+ after United triumphed by two goals in Amsterdam: “We already knew he was a terrific player – a typical Ajax guy who is good on the ball. We have a lot of young players at the club, but we’re always seeking for new ones. It is impossible to forecast.”

After learning of Ferguson’s praise for him, Eriksen told Ekstra Bladet after the game: “It’s wonderful and an honor to hear him say nice things about me, especially since it’s not just any old manager. It’s something I’ll have to adjust to. He is, in my opinion, one of the best managers in the game.”

When asked if he would be interested in moving to Old Trafford, he replied: “Of course, I want to play for a major club at some point, but I’m not thinking of something that large right now. For the time being, my dream is solely about Ajax.”

Eriksen will now join United under Erik ten Hag, with whom he has a close relationship. The Danish great never played for Ten Hag at Ajax, but he was brought back last year to practice with the group in an effort to help him regain full fitness after leaving Inter.
