Former Manchester United fan Patrice Evra has urged that Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw leave the club after being kept out of Monday night’s 2-1 win over Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag snubbed the high-profile trio before the seismic encounter, which came after successive league defeats to Brighton and Brentford. And the Dutchman’s choice was instantly validated, as United stunned their archrivals with a far superior performance.

After replacing Ronaldo in the midfield, Marcus Rashford scored the game-winning goal, while Raphael Varane and Tyrell Malacia shone in place of Maguire and Shaw, respectively.

And Evra, who made over 370 games for United, believes Ten Hag deserves a lot of respect for taking a risk with his pick, which proved to be the trigger for a valuable outcome.

“We should give a lot of credit to Ten Hag because he’s had a tough start to the season and coming into a game against Liverpool, to make changes, even in the game, you could see that he wanted the team to score that second goal to secure the win, was really important,” Evra said as a Betfair ambassador. He’s not going anywhere. He needs the right players and mindsets, but I believe in this manager.

“When you win against Liverpool, you get the crowd on your side, which is a huge lift for him.” Ten Hag will now have to make team decisions rather than solo ones.

“I’m confident that the starting eleven played a significant role in the victory.” We would have lost if we had started with the same players we did against Brighton and Brentford. I believe Ten Hag was selfish and just concerned with himself; he would have said, ‘I don’t want to lose my position, therefore I need to get rid of highly important players and make changes,’ and he did.”

Ronaldo, Maguire, and Shaw were all under severe scrutiny even before they were sidelined for the match against Liverpool. Ronaldo has already stated his intention to leave the club following the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, while Maguire and Shaw have become vilified characters following a succession of poor performances.

And Evra is sure that all three would gain from leaving Manchester United after being dropped for such a high-profile match.

“Let’s be clear, I can say people are unfair to Harry Maguire, but he is paying the price for his transfer fee,” he continued. From that day forward, I predicted that he would have the most difficult season for United since people were only concerned with the price. People would say he’s a terrific center back if we purchased him for £5 million. We all have bad games, but it’s gotten to the point where even if he has a terrific game, people are upset. As a result, he is surrounded by negativity.

“Another issue is the Cristiano Ronaldo situation.” Is he going to stay? Is he going to leave? It has caused much consternation among fans. He’s still here, and the transfer window isn’t closed, but knowing Cristiano, I believe he’d like to leave if he doesn’t play. I believe this is the greatest option for both him and United.

“We’ve been playing Luke Shaw for a long time, and I’m very careful when I talk about left-backs because I’ve played in this position, and it’s not an easy position.” Luke Shaw has been here for so long and has yet to live up to the standards set by Dennis Irwin and myself, and I believe left-back is an important position for United.

“Perhaps it’s time to let those players go.”
