Manchester United may still make a late-season addition before the transfer market closes. Despite thoughts that the Red Devils’ business is done for the summer, reports in Spain indicate Memphis Depay is ‘considering an offer to return to Old Trafford five and a half years after leaving. And, with Erik ten Hag eager to bolster his squad and Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure still a possibility, a late-season blockbuster cannot be ruled out…

So far this summer, Manchester United has signed five players.

Tyrell Malacia was the first to arrive, flying in from Feyenoord in the Netherlands.

Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen arrived from Ajax and Brentford, respectively, while Casemiro and Antony have also joined the Premier League.

Many people believe United’s business is done for the summer. The Glazers may believe they have already invested £200 million in Ten Hag.

However, there is still speculation around Depay, with Catalan media suggesting the 28-year-old is ‘considering an offer to return to Old Trafford.

The Netherlands international has been declared surplus to requirements in Barcelona as the team attempts to raise funds to aid with their financial condition.

With Ten Hag allegedly still interested in a No. 9, a spectacular return to Old Trafford is feasible.

Depay, of course, previously played for United.

He previously signed in the summer transfer window of 2015, when Louis van Gaal beat out rivals Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.

Many people thought United had signed a player with the potential to become one of the finest in the world at the time.

Depay has been devastating for PSV Eindhoven during his final season, scoring 22 goals and providing five assists in 30 appearances.

United also managed to stave off interest from domestic and European competitors by clinching a £26 million agreement.

Depay got off to a good start, scoring twice in a 3-1 Champions League triumph over Club Brugge while wearing the club’s historic No 7 shirt over his back.

However, he had an alarming drop in form and was never able to recover.

Van Gaal left him out of United’s FA Cup final victory over Crystal Palace in 2016, shortly before releasing him.

And Jose Mourinho eventually sold Depay to Lyon, deeming the current Barcelona star insufficient.

He has, however, rebuilt his career since then.

Depay was a standout for Lyon, scoring 76 goals in 178 appearances and recovering his swagger and mojo in the process.

And he’s always been a standout at the international level, scoring 42 goals in 80 appearances for his country.

A return to United could now be on the cards.

While this is true, it appears that any future transfer is going to be contingent on what happens with Ronaldo.

Ronaldo wants out of Manchester United, and the Portugal international is still hoping for a Champions League team to come to his aid before the deadline.

And, with United appearing to have made an approach to Depay, his signing may be a bonus before the deadline on Thursday.

Any agreement would allow Anthony Elanga to go out on loan as well, despite the fact that the Sweden international still has a lot to learn before becoming a world-beater.

So it’ll be interesting to see what happens over the next 24 hours or so.
