Announced – Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag wants to sign another Paul Pogba and deal makes perfect sense

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wants to sign Harry Kane, who will cost more than the £89 million the club paid for Paul Pogba in the summer of 2016. A reprise of Manchester United's transfer record-breaking spree appears to be on the cards over seven years later. Jose Mourinho spent £89 million for Paul Pogba in 2016, hoping for a shot at Premier League title success four years after leaving Old Trafford for free. Erik ten Hag now wants Harry Kane for £100 million - a deal that would make perfect sense for his club given their acute need for a world-class No 9. United were confident that Pogba's Hollywood homecoming would lead to Old Trafford's glory days returning, despite the fact that the club had struggled in the three years since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure. That's why they were content to make the France international the most expensive player in the world. Mourinho envisioned Pogba as his midfield commander, capable of dominating the Premier League and leading the club to success. Things got off to a good start for the 30-year-old, who led the Red Devils to EFL Cup and Europa League victory. However, by the time Pogba left last summer, he had become a flop. One of the biggest in the club's illustrious history, too. Pogba and Mourinho had a falling out, which was captured on video by Sky Sports and beamed around the world for all to see. Despite having a positive relationship behind the scenes, the 2018 World Cup winner would blow hot and cold under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And Pogba's injury problems had already begun by the time Ralf Rangnick took over as manager last season. Even if you ignore his price tag, United was always taking a risk when it comes to re-signing the player. Pogba had already abandoned the club, prompting Ferguson to question his integrity and dedication. A deal, in the Scot's opinion, was not all blue skies and sunshine. When it comes to acquiring Kane for a record fee this summer, however, it's a pursuit that makes perfect sense. United require a top-tier striker. In recent years, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani have served as fill-ins, but United now want someone who is at the top of their game. Kane unquestionably comes into this category. Tottenham have had another difficult year, toiling in every competition under managers such as Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini - with Ryan Mason primed to be the next guy to rule the roost, albeit temporarily. Nonetheless, Kane has continued to thrive, scoring 26 goals in 43 games across all competitions. Tottenham have been so poor that they may be struggling to finish in the top half of the table without their talismanic leader. Whereas Pogba was still young and learning his trade when he returned to Old Trafford, Kane is the genuine deal right now. Only Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer have scored more goals in the Premier League than him with 207 in 314 games. In 408 appearances, he found the net 301 times in all club competitions. Kane is also England's all-time leading goalscorer, with 55 goals on the international stage. Since the 2014/2015 season, the 29-year-old has scored at least 24 goals every year, making him one of the most lethal players on the planet. Without a doubt, United could use some of that. Martial may be effective, but injuries have hampered the France international, prompting speculation of a summer move. Weghorst has never looked good enough since joining on loan from Burnley in January. When United broke their transfer record to buy Pogba, they put undue pressure on the midfielder, who was still a teenager at the time. A trade for Kane is significantly more sensible, and it's no surprise that Ten Hag is eager to reach an agreement with Tottenham this summer.
