The 20-year-old phenom displayed his skills by netting a brilliant opening goal, marking his seventh goal for Denmark in a hard-fought 2-1 victory. However, the match wasn’t without its controversies.

Hojlund was relentless in his performance, earning four crucial free-kicks for Denmark, all while facing some rather aggressive tactics from the San Marino side, seemingly aimed at unsettling the young striker.

The game took a darker turn in the 88th minute when San Marino’s defender, Roberto Di Maio, blatantly thrust his left knee into Hojlund’s back. The referee responded with a yellow card, a decision that left Hojlund fuming as he described it as “a joke” in a post-match interview on Danish TV.

Adding fuel to the fire, Denmark’s captain, Simon Kjaer, who plies his trade for AC Milan, claimed that San Marino’s players were deliberately trying to injure Hojlund. Kjaer, who understands Italian, overheard San Marino players discussing their intentions to target Hojlund’s knees during the game.

Kjaer stated, “It clearly had to be a red card. It was 100% intentional, and I think Neymar has also been subjected to a similar attack in the past, as we saw in the 2014 World Cup. San Marino players openly admitted they would continue to target Hojlund’s knees. I reported this to the referee and even offered to translate for him.”

Hojlund later confirmed the unsettling situation, saying, “I felt they were specifically targeting me, as you can see from the events towards the end of the game. I understand Italian, and I could hear them discussing their plan to harm me. You can clearly see from the footage that there was no doubt about their intentions. A yellow card is simply inadequate.”

Reflecting on the incident, it’s evident that this was a case of deliberate foul play, deserving of a red card. This controversy added to the tension, especially considering Hojlund’s recent return from a back injury at Manchester United. The football world is left buzzing with this shocking turn of events.
