In the pursuit of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, Manchester United has faced disappointment as their opening bid has been turned down by the Serie A club.
The Red Devils submitted an offer of approximately £34.4 million, with potential bonuses that could have brought the total deal value to around £38.5 million.
However, Inter Milan has rejected the bid, as it falls short of their asking price of £44 million, as reported by reliable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
Andre Onana is the preferred choice of United manager Erik ten Hag to replace David De Gea, who is currently a free agent following the expiration of his contract on July 1st.
While negotiations between Manchester United and De Gea for a new contract are ongoing, it appears unlikely that the Spanish goalkeeper will agree to new terms.
De Gea, who had been the highest earner at the club with a weekly wage of £375,000, leaving would provide substantial financial relief on the wage bill.
However, if Manchester United wishes to secure the services of former Ajax star Onana, they will need to increase their offer. Inter Milan is keen on resolving the matter within the next two weeks.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils anticipate completing the signing of Mason Mount this week, with the midfielder having already undergone a medical examination at Carrington on Monday.
United had a £55 million bid accepted by Chelsea for Mount last week, leaving only £65 million remaining from Ten Hag’s budget once the deal is finalized.
To acquire a top striker in this transfer window, Manchester United will need to raise significant funds through player sales. Ten Hag is particularly keen on adding a new center forward to the squad.
Hence, the club is open to offers for players such as Dean Henderson, Harry Maguire, Alex Telles, Donny van de Beek, Eric Bailly, Anthony Elanga, Fred, and Anthony Martial in order to generate the necessary funds.
