In the last seconds of United’s 2-2 tie with Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinal on Thursday, the Argentine star dropped holding his foot. He needed help getting off the field and was carried off by Sevilla international teammates Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel.

Martinez’s injury was revealed to have fractured a metatarsal bone in his foot the following day, leaving him out for the duration of the season. The defender’s ailment has now been effectively treated with surgery.

Martinez said on Instagram late Monday night, “Everything went really well, thanks to God!” Thank you for all of your messages. “I’m now concentrating on my recovery.”

Martinez’s teammates were clearly overjoyed with the news that the operation went well, with numerous commenting.

David De Gea used a butcher’s knife emoji, while Alejandro Garnacho used bicep and heart emoticons. Bjorn Hardley, a young United center-back who could be called up to the first-team squad in Martinez’s absence, tweeted: “Coming back stronger.”

Marc Jurado added: “Come on brother.”

Martinez previously expressed his thoughts on Instagram after having his debut season at Old Trafford cut short by injury: “Not the way I imagined what’s been a very special season would end, but sometimes we face obstacles along the way that we have to overcome to make us stronger, and we learn from them.”

“I know I’ll be back for more very soon.” Meanwhile, I’ll continue to help all of my teammates reach our goals.

“The amount of messages and support I’ve received has been incredible; they’re giving me strength and encouragement right now.” Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.”

The 25-year-old is expected to be fully recovered by the start of the next season.

After Raphael Varane was forced off in the same game, Erik ten Hag’s team will now be without both first-choice center-backs.
