According to De Telegraaf, Manchester United is interested in signing PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo this summer.
The Red Devils intend to sign two attacking players before the transfer deadline, according to De Telegraaf, and Antony and Gakpo are the top targets.
According to the Dutch outlet, United has serious plans to land Gakpo. They intend to make a bid following PSV’s Champions League play-off second leg against Rangers tonight.
PSV would prefer to keep the 23-year-old for at least another season if they qualify for the Champions League, but they will let him go for around £42 million.
Gakpo is said to be excited about the prospect of working for United under manager Erik ten Hag. He has already agreed to personal terms with the Red Devils regarding a possible transfer.
In our opinion:
United intends to address their concerns in both wide positions. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho shone against Liverpool, but the combination has been disappointing overall.
Ten Hag would not want to put too much faith in the Red Devils’ tandem. Antony and Gakpo would provide strong competition and the chance to stake a claim for regular starts.
Antony, a right-winger by trade, could be viewed as a rival for Sancho. Gakpo, on the other hand, is a left-wing dominant player who appears to be a good fit to compete with Rashford.
Gakpo had a fantastic 2021/22 season for PSV, scoring 36 goals, and he has carried that form into this season, scoring seven goals in just six appearances.
He will face a big test with the move to the Premier League but has traits that would suit Ten Hag’s style of play. He has good speed, and dribbling ability, and can make key passes.
Antony, who possesses similar qualities, would complement him on the other flank. With the hectic schedule this season, Ten Hag will most likely rotate his wingers on a regular basis, and he may prefer to have four top players.
