Manchester United’s chances of beating Southampton on Sunday should be enhanced by the return of Anthony Martial, but it remains to be seen whether Erik ten Hag would risk the Frenchman.

The Reds welcome the Saints to Old Trafford, looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League after being humiliated 7-0 by Liverpool the previous weekend. Ten Hag’s rebounded to their humiliation by defeating Real Betis 4-1 in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash on Thursday night.

For the triumph in midweek, United was missing Anthony Martial and Marcel Sabitzer. However, Christian Eriksen is still out with an ankle injury, while Donny van de Beek (knee) will miss the rest of the season. Ten Hag, who was short on choices in midfield, stuck with the same trio that played in the loss at Anfield for the match against Betis.

Here is the current state of play on the Carrington treatment table ahead of the Premier League meeting with relegation-threatened Southampton…

Anthony Martial has a groin/hip/pelvic injury.

Return dates: March 12, March 16, or March 19.

Ten Hag has stated: “I believe we had a good plan all along, but it [didn’t] always [work well]. But he’s on his way back, and he’s back in training, so we’ll be cautious.”

Dates of possible return: TBD

“The only downside is Marcel Sabitzer is not available,” Ten Hag added.

Return date: late April or early May

Ten Hag has stated: “I believe he [Eriksen] will return in 2022/23. Definitely. Although I can’t say what to expect right now, but I believe his rehab progress is on track. If all goes as planned, we will definitely see him. But not till after the international break. Absolutely, he is still [a member of the group]. But, of course, his primary aim right now is to return as quickly as possible since we need all of the guys.”

Van de Beek, Donny

Upcoming season’s return date

Ten Hag stated, “Of course, the bad news is that he is out for the rest of the season, but the good news is that his knee will be OK in the long run, and he will be ready to play at the highest levels and for the start of pre-season.”
