With several key players departing and a lot of spots needing to be filled, Manchester United will have to rebuild in the summer. The striker position is one area where the club urgently requires reinforcements.
Edinson Cavani has been hampered by injuries this season, while Cristiano Ronaldo, who is 37 years old, is exhibiting symptoms of slowing down, prompting concerns about his overall game. As a result, the Manchester Evening News knows that United is looking for a younger striker in the summer market.
And, with Cavani’s contract expiring at the end of the season and Ronaldo’s future uncertain due to the possibility of United missing out on Champions League football, the forward must be able to make an immediate impact. This is why the team has been linked with Tammy Abraham, who is presently playing for AS Roma in Italy after leaving Chelsea in the summer.
With 23 goals in all competitions, Abraham is Roma’s leading scorer, and coach Jose Mourinho has lauded him while also encouraging him in his customary manner by stating he can do a lot more. He told DAZN, “I disagree that Abraham is excellent; he can do much more.” I expect a lot from him because I know his potential; I’m not talking about goals here, but he must have this mindset in every game.’
United are ‘considering’ a bid for Abraham, according to Italian source Il Messaggero, cited by Football Italia, although Roma are demanding a sum of approximately £100 million to part ways with Mourinho’s talisman. In a recent interview, the English striker was asked about the rumors.
“When I read reports associating me with other clubs, it makes me feel good, it makes you feel like you’re doing something right,” Abraham told TalkSport. It’s a good feeling to see your name in the press. But for me, it’s about concentrating on my work here. I’m sure I’ll continue to be linked to a variety of teams, but who knows what the future holds?
“Of course, I was born and raised in England; I’m a Londoner.” So perhaps one day I’ll return to the Premier League to make a splash. But for now, it’s all about focusing on Rome, giving my best, and perhaps winning a trophy for these people, which they haven’t won in many years.”
Chelsea is said to have a buy-back clause that kicks in in 2023, and considering their current front-line woes with Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, they may want to resign the player. Given the quality young strikers on the market and their striking troubles, as we saw against Leicester, United must invest massively in their striker this summer.
