When Juan Mata’s Manchester United contract expires in the summer, he has had offers to play in the MLS.
Mata, who will turn 34 on April 28, is considering playing in the United States to extend his playing career. After eight and a half years at United, the Spaniard’s contract expires on June 30 and he is set to be freed.
Mata’s contract was extended for another year last summer, but he has only started twice this season. Mata also came in in the last seconds of Atletico Madrid’s round-of-16 defeat to Villarreal, the FA Cup fourth round tie with Middlesbrough to convert a penalty in a shootout defeat, and the round-of-16 defeat to Villarreal.
“Of course I will be working with Common Goal (his charity) because that is something that goes beyond football,” Mata told club reporters earlier this week.
“It’s something that will last a long time and will remain after I and many other members have left, but my mind is 100% devoted to performing.”
Mata joined United from Chelsea in a club-record £37.1 million transfer in January 2014. He started and scored in United’s 2016 FA Cup final win, as well as the 2017 League Cup final and Europa League final – the three times the club has won silverware since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
Mata has played 278 times for United and scored 51 goals. He was a World Cup and European Championship winner with Spain. In 2011, he moved to England to join Chelsea, where he won the FA Cup, the Champions League, and the Europa League, as well as being named the club’s player of the year in each of his two seasons at Stamford Bridge.
