Ralf Rangnick, Manchester United’s interim manager, has indicated that Edinson Cavani is unlikely to start Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.
The striker, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has missed the last four games due to a groyne issue that has plagued him all season. He hasn’t played since a surprising start against Burnley in a 1-1 draw on February 8.
The Uruguayan has increased his training efforts this week and is expected to be included in the squad for the trip across town to Pep Guardiola’s table-toppers, as Rangnick said during his pre-match news conference on Friday. Cavani, on the other hand, is unlikely to return to the starting lineup right away.
Rangnick has indicated that it is likely too early for him to be considered for a starting spot, but he could come off the bench in the second half.
Rangnick told United’s official website, “Well, it’s fantastic to have him back.” “In a centre attacking position, we have one additional option, but he has been out for three weeks.”
“That’s something more we need to keep in mind.” I don’t think he’d be able to play for more than a half-hour.
“He’s ready for that, for coming on as a substitute, but I don’t think he can start that game.”
Rangnick has also benefited from Scotland international Scott McTominay’s comeback. Due to illness, the midfielder has missed United’s last two games.

The Scot, like Cavani, has been training all week in preparation for the derby, bolstering Rangnick’s midfield options. Unlike Cavani, however, he may be in contention for a starting spot.
“It’s important to have him available,” the German continued. He’s been working out for the past week.
“He’s just been out for a week, but he was extremely ill and had lost weight.” I believe he has a chance to start, but I’ll make that decision after the last training session tomorrow [Saturday].”
