De Gea, 32, left United at the conclusion of the previous season as his contract came to an end, and new signing Andre Onana took over as the No 1 goalkeeper. Onana, who joined from Inter Milan during the summer, has faced challenges in his role.

De Gea has remained silent about his future, leading to speculation that he might opt for retirement instead of pursuing further professional opportunities.

On Tuesday, the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper posted a picture of himself back in Manchester on his Instagram account.

This caused a flurry of comments from fans urging United to re-sign him, with some even suggesting that a return to Old Trafford might already be in the works.

However, the Daily Mail has now clarified the actual reason for De Gea’s return to England.

According to the report, “The Spanish goalkeeper returned to the UK on Monday and is spending a few days sorting out the house in Hale where he lived until leaving United after 12 years at the end of June.”

The report continued to state that De Gea has joined his partner, pop star Edurne Garcia, and their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Yanay at their family home in Madrid, where the couple got married last summer.

It is understood that De Gea, who will turn 33 next month, is taking a relaxed approach to his future while enjoying quality family time.

He is in no hurry to secure a new club and may reconsider his options in January. Having earned £375,000 a week during his last four years at Old Trafford, he can afford to be patient.
