Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United will serve a one-match suspension against Aston Villa at Villa Park next weekend.

Bruno Fernandes will miss Manchester United’s match against Aston Villa next weekend after picking up his fifth Premier League booking of the season during Sunday’s 1-0 win against West Ham United at Old Trafford.

The Portugal international was cautioned late in the game for a tackle on Jarrod Bowen after handing the captain’s armband back to Harry Maguire, who was given his first league start since August against David Moyes’ team. It was his fifth booking of the season, therefore he will miss next weekend’s trip to Villa Park due to a one-match suspension.

Fernandes, who has only scored two goals this season, has played every minute for United in the Premier League this season, forcing manager Erik ten Hag to make an unwelcome substitution against Villa. Fernandes had been on a disciplinary teeter-totter since being booked in a goalless draw with Newcastle United two weeks ago.

Fernandes, on the other hand, will be eligible for Thursday’s crucial Europa League match against Real Sociedad in Spain. United must win by a two-goal margin to win Group E and advance to the last 16 of the competition without having to compete in a play-off against a third-placed Champions League team.

The Portugal international has started four of Liverpool’s first five Europa League games this season, indicating that he has played an important role in the club’s bid to win the group. On Thursday night, United defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0 to set up the massive game with Sociedad.

Meanwhile, United right-back Diogo Dalot, who was outstanding against West Ham, is one booking away from a one-match suspension in the Premier League. So far this semester, he has received four cautions.
