Ronaldo started United’s previous four games but is not in the 20-man squad for Villa’s visit to Old Trafford.

United play Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday before the domestic season is suspended to accommodate the World Cup.

Ronaldo, who played in the finals in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018, was chosen to the Portugal squad on Thursday evening.

Fellow Manchester United attackers Antony and Jadon Sancho are both absent. Antony has been out for two weeks owing to a leg injury, and Jadon Sancho has been out for a similar amount of time due to illness.

“Jadon is ill, Cristiano is ill, and Antony is hurt,” Ten Hag told MUTV.
