Not Gakpo – Paul Scholes identifies perfect Cristiano Ronaldo replacement for Man Utd in unstoppable World Cup star

Paul Scholes has given his opinion on who Manchester United should target in the January transfer window to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

Following Ronaldo’s departure, Manchester United is in the market for another forward. Erik ten Hag presently has only Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as offensive options.

While Cristiano Ronaldo was not Ten Hag’s first choice, he does provide United with a new dynamic in the final third that they now lack.

Ten Hag’s team has only scored 20 goals in the Premier League this season, with an average of 1.42 goals per game. This season, they are expected to score only 54 goals.

Up to this point, Chelsea is the only team in the top half of the Premier League to have scored fewer goals than United.

Scholes, a Manchester United star, has weighed in on the striker dilemma and named the ideal Ronaldo successor.

“I think there are a few of forwards they might look at,” Scholes told MUTV’s The Debate.

“We have Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, both of whom can play there, but I believe Marcus likes to go out wide, and Antony’s injury record isn’t terrific.”

“January may be too soon [to replace Ronaldo], they’re probably looking at next summer already, but I believe there are players available.”

“The lad at PSV – Gakpo – is performing incredibly well for the Netherlands at the World Cup, and I believe Ten Hag was previously interested in him.”

“There are definitely players out there.” January might be a difficult time to do business, but I am hopeful that we can do something and bring in a new center forward.”

Cody Gakpo is the ideal candidate.
Given the style of play, Ten Hag wants to implement at Old Trafford, a move for PSV’s Gakpo makes sense.

The Dutch forward has performed admirably for both club and country. He has scored in each of his three World Cup appearances in Qatar.

Gakpo emerged as a target for Manchester United some time ago after dazzling in the Eredivisie for PSV. This season, the 23-year-old has 15 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.

Rashford has rekindled his form in recent months, albeit there is some discussion over what his ideal position is.

Ten Hag was asked about Rashford playing on the right side earlier this month.

“He can play there because he can stretch across all three positions and score goals in each,” Ten Hag noted on the club’s official website.

“[Marcus] Rashford’s best position is nine or coming in from the left.”

Alejandro Garnacho has also developed as a key player for Manchester United. He had a string of promising performances before the international break.

Ten Hag now has a number of forwards on whom he can rely, but the United squad clearly needs another talisman.
