Gary Neville has expressed his newfound dissatisfaction with the Glazer family’s control of Manchester United.
The Glazers have had a tumultuous few years as the club’s owners, unable to produce a trophy since winning the Europa League in 2017. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, United have failed to reach the heights of their past glory days, and many have blamed the owners, while others have pointed the finger at the manager.
The Red Devils’ latest failure came on Tuesday when they were defeated by Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford, resulting in a surprising early elimination from the Champions League. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano, the two clubs entered the second game in excellent form.
In the 80th minute, Anthony Elanga equalized, canceling out Joao Felix’s first-half effort. But everything went wrong for United and interim manager Ralf Rangnick on Tuesday, as Renan Lodi’s goal proved to be the difference as Diego Simeone’s club advanced to the final eight.
When asked about his thoughts on the situation following Tuesday’s exit, Neville emphasized that the owners, not Rangnick, are to blame. “I don’t blame Ralf Rangnick; there are huge players in this club, significant difficulties in this club; the owners are not good enough; the owners ought to sell the company,” he said tv2.
United now faces the threat of missing out on Europe’s top club competition next season, which means Cristiano Ronaldo may never play in the Champions League again. With 50 points after 29 games, the Red Devils are in fifth place in the Premier League rankings.
Rangnick’s team is one point behind Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta after two games and is only two points ahead of Tottenham – who also have a game in hand. It’s unclear who will be in control next season, although it’s unlikely to be Rangnick.
The German interim manager is expected to stand down at the end of the current season, with a number of big-name managers being mentioned as possible successors. Thomas Tuchel of Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino of PSG, and Erik ten Hag of Ajax have all been connected with the manager’s job at Old Trafford.

Due to the FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend and the following international break, United will have more than two weeks free until they kick a ball again. The Red Devils will then return to Premier League action on April 2 when they host Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City at Old Trafford.
A week later, United travels to Goodison Park to face Everton, before hosting relegation-threatened Norwich on April 16.
