Rio Ferdinand has stated that Harry Maguire’s lack of speed may have an impact on his long-term future at Manchester United.
The Red Devils captain has had a mixed season at Old Trafford, with a lack of consistency hurting him this season.
While he played effectively in recent victories over Brighton & Hove Albion and Leeds United, he struggled against Burnley and Atletico Madrid last month.
Ferdinand was asked about Maguire’s form ahead of the Manchester derby, as well as which center-back partnership he would start at the Etihad.

“[Victor] Lindelof and [Raphael] Varane,” the 43-year-old said in his podcast Vibe with Five.
“I believe there is room for development,” he added. “I believe Lindelof is an excellent, solid player.” Is he capable of helping you win the league? “I’m not sure.”
Ferdinand went on to say that Lindelof isn’t the only source of concern in the United backline and that Maguire issues with one of the most important characteristics of a modern-day center-back.
While the former Manchester United defender sees lots of positives in Maguire’s game, he believes his lack of pace will have an impact on the England international’s future at the club.
“Will Maguire be able to help you win the league?” “That’s also a question,” Ferdinand added. “The thing about Ralf and the top teams now is that they play on the front foot, aggressively, and seek to win the ball high.”
“As a result, you need defenders who can defend one v one and two v two on the halfway line.” This allows you to have more bodies in the opposing team’s half of the field. That’s why teams do it: to get the ball early and get close to the opposing goal.
“Liverpool does it extremely well, and City does it extremely well as well.” Everyone is headed in that direction, and Ralf Rangnick’s football style is similar. Can you pull that off with Maguire? That is my question, and that is my problem.
“His pace won’t allow it, and he’ll always be gazing behind him.” If I’m a swift attacker, I’d be hanging around near Harry Maguire.
“Despite all of his positive characteristics, that is a significant flaw in his game.” I believe Maguire will struggle in the long run unless he can find that extra yard on the turn.”
