Manchester United star suffers injury blow on in international duty
Martin Dubravka of Manchester United has been forced to withdraw from the Slovakia team due to a training injury.
Manchester United have confirmed that on-loan goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has been forced to withdraw from Slovakia’s team due to injury.
The goalkeeper, who joined United on loan from Premier League rivals Newcastle United on transfer deadline day, was injured in training while preparing for Slovakia’s Nations League match against Azerbaijan on Thursday evening. He has left the squad as a precaution and will return to United’s Carrington training facility to have his injury evaluated.
Dubravka, who was replaced as Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeper this summer by Burnley’s Nick Pope, was left out of the United team that traveled to Moldova for the Europa League match against Sheriff Tiraspol last week. The cause for his absence was not made public.
He was scheduled to try to help Slovakia pick up some points in their Nations League campaign during the current international break, with Francesco Calzona’s side facing both Azerbaijan and Belarus. He is their first-choice goalkeeper and started all three of their group games at last year’s European Championship.
He is yet to make his United debut after arriving at Old Trafford earlier this month, only appearing on the substitutes’ bench twice. He was brought in to give competition and backup for David de Gea.
Earlier this week, Dubravka discussed how he is adapting to life in M16, praising Cristiano Ronaldo for his assistance and communication.
“Aside from Scott McTominay and Tom Heaton, who is right next to me in the changing room, I’ve probably had the most conversation with him (Ronaldo) all day,” Dubravka told Sport. “We had the chance to talk to each other before and after training in the gym.”
“He inquired about my family, whether I was sleeping in a hotel at the time, and the typical questions.” He expressed an interest in communication and, in particular, he took the initiative. I didn’t want to appear a fan by approaching him directly, but it was extremely enjoyable to talk to him about anything.”
