Wout Weghorst was praised by Erik ten Hag as “one of the best players on the pitch” in Manchester United’s comeback win over West Ham United.
United came back from a goal down to win 3-1 in the closing 13 minutes of their FA Cup fifth-round clash, setting up a home quarter-final against Fulham on March 19.
Weghorst assisted Nayef Aguerd’s own goal when his shot deflected into the path of Alejandro Garnacho, who curled in the 90th-minute winner, and the Dutchman pushed Aguerd into an error, allowing Fred to win.
“I thought he was one of the greatest players on the field,” remarked Ten Hag. “I suppose he was involved to see the corner, maybe he was in front when he came up together with Harry (Maguire) to force the own goal from the opponent.
“I think the goal from Garnacho he was pushing in switch of play and surely in the third goal he offered a strong press and caused the opponent to make a mistake where Fred scored.
“He knows to position both in and out of possession, and he’s doing an excellent job for the club.”
Weghorst has started all 13 United games in which he has been available, although his only goal for the club came in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on January 25.
Ten Hag is adamant that Weghorst will begin adding to United’s column goals. “That will happen. I’ve worked with a large number of players. I’m thinking about (Marcus) Rashford, who didn’t score in every game at the start of the season.
“But, I know from past experience that it will come. After he has settled down, he has had a lot of games with us but not for such a long amount of time; when he is here for a longer period of time, the routines will be there, and when the first goal comes, more will follow.”
