Manchester United will make a decision on Mason Greenwood’s future before the start of the new Premier League season. The 21-year-old has not played for the Red Devils since being suspended by the club in January, with an internal inquiry underway at Old Trafford following the dismissal of the charges against him earlier this year.

Greenwood is still unavailable for selection at United and has yet to return to first-team training at Carrington, despite being spotted working with a private coach in his spare time. The forward has been suspended with pay for nearly 19 months but will learn his fate at United within the next two weeks.

The Red Devils have completed their internal investigation into Greenwood and will make their findings public before the start of the Premier League season in mid-August. United’s season kicks off against Wolves at home in just over two weeks, with a decision on Greenwood’s future expected in the coming days.

It remains to be seen whether the former England striker will be welcomed back into the fold at Old Trafford, as club officials have taken their time reaching a final decision following their probe. During the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, Erik ten Hag was asked about Greenwood and indicated that he has provided his own opinion but will accept whatever United decides to do with him.

“It’s a club decision,” Ten Hag explained. “Of course, I’ve expressed my thoughts and opinions, but it’s a club decision.” That is something we must all accept. I can’t say much about it, but I can say that I voiced my view on it, so let’s see what happens and what decision is made.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United veteran Wayne Rooney has previously stated that a fresh start abroad would be the best option for all parties, with a move allowing Greenwood to restart his playing career away from the glare of United.

“It leaves Mason Greenwood in a position where he is stuck,” Rooney explained to The Athletic. “So it’s a bad situation for Mason because I’m sure he just wants to play football, but it’s almost a catch 22 for the club, its image, and ensuring they make the right decisions.”

“I believe Mason’s best option right now is to leave the club and develop elsewhere.” He needs to get back into the game because it’s been a long time. With everything that has happened and how long the internal investigation has taken, Mason probably simply needs to go play and attempt to get his career back on track.”

Greenwood joined United at the age of six and has made 129 senior appearances for the club since his professional debut four years ago. He has also earned a solitary cap for England, but has not played for the Three Lions since breaking Covid-19 regulations in Iceland in 2020.
