Frenkie de Jong, a Manchester United transfer target, was praised by manager Louis van Gaal for his contribution to the Netherlands’ stunning victory over Belgium on Friday night.

While one former United player, Memphis Depay, grabbed the headlines with two goals in the Nations League opening in Brussels, it was a possible future Old Trafford star in De Jong who piqued the national team coach’s interest. De Jong was on the field for the whole 90-minute game, which the Netherlands won 4-1.

However, when it comes to discussing a fee for De Jong ahead of his potential summer transfer, Barcelona may be forced to reconsider after witnessing their man put in another powerful performance in the Netherlands engine room. He was the center of Van Gaal’s three midfielders.

During his post-match interview with NOS, the former United boss stated: “It is always a team triumph, but there are individuals who can flourish in the collective, which is of course fantastic. There are always stars in certain matches, but Frenkie de Jong and Steven Bergwijn were amazing in this one.”

After convincingly defeating Belgium, the Netherlands will continue their Group A4 push with games against Wales (twice) and Poland before the June break.
