Rashford, who had an outstanding season last year, has struggled in the current campaign, contributing only two goals and three assists in 18 appearances.

His recent lackluster performance against Newcastle prompted Hislop to assert that leaving Rashford out is essential to set a standard and convey that subpar efforts are unacceptable.

During an appearance on the ESPN FC Show, Hislop emphasized the need for accountability, stating that even if Rashford is the most talented player in the squad, his lackadaisical display against Newcastle cannot be tolerated.

Hislop urged Ten Hag to make a strong statement by excluding Rashford from the starting lineup, sending a message to the entire team that such performances are not acceptable.

Hislop expressed his disappointment, saying:

“You’ve got to leave Marcus Rashford out. Absolutely. I’ve sat here and I’ve tried to back Marcus Rashford, I think he’s an incredible talent.

Arguably the most talented player in that Manchester United dressing room.”

“You cannot have somebody, even if it’s the most talented player in the dressing room, strolling about the park like Marcus Rashford did against Newcastle.

You simply cannot. Even if it’s an effort and just to say I am not accepting this from anyone.

You have to leave him out. Otherwise, you give everybody licence to do similar. I do not think I have seen a worse effort on the football field.”

As the pressure mounts on Ten Hag, the decision to drop Rashford could be a pivotal move, defining the manager’s stance on accountability and performance standards.

With Manchester United facing a challenging fixture schedule ahead, including matches against Bournemouth, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool, Ten Hag’s handling of the situation may play a crucial role in the team’s trajectory.
