As Eric Bailly gets closer to leaving Manchester United, Erik ten Hag has already picked the next three players he wants to let go.

The Ivorian defender, who joined the club during Jose Mourinho’s reign in 2016, has become a peripheral figure over the past year and has not appeared in any of United’s matchday squads this season.

Bailly’s departure seemed inevitable after United spent more than £56 million to sign Lisandro Martinez, and he is now set to join Marseille on a season-long loan move in order to play regular first-team football again.

As part of the agreement, the French giants will be required to sign Bailly on a permanent basis for about €7 million (£5.9 million) if they qualify for the Champions League and the 28-year-old plays a set number of games over the next year.

And Bailly is not the only defender expected to leave United in the coming weeks, with The Telegraph reporting that Ten Hag is now looking to unload Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Phil Jones, and Axel Tuanzabe.

The trio have all fallen out of favor with the Dutchman, who is eager to make room in his squad for new arrivals before the September 1 deadline.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed Wan-Bissaka for an eye-watering £50 million sum in 2019, but the former Crystal Palace right-back has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford.

After a breakthrough season at Selhurst Park, the 24-year-old was ranked as one of the most promising defenders in the country, but he has since lost his first-team berth to Diogo Dalot and has been linked with a £10 million return to the Eagles.

Jones has been plagued by injuries throughout his career at Manchester United, but he was impressed when he was unexpectedly thrust back into first-team action last season. However, the veteran is no longer needed and is free to go on.

Tuanzabe is set to join Jones and Wan-Bissaka in leaving Old Trafford after failing to make an impact during loan spells at Aston Villa and Napoli. Since his senior debut in 2017, the United academy graduate has made just 37 appearances for the club.

In addition to attacking reinforcements, Ten Hag is desperate to sign another right-back before the transfer deadline, with Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Meunier of interest.

The United manager is also looking for a goalkeeper to replace David de Gea, and another midfielder might emerge despite the recent £60 million signing of Casemiro.
