Frenkie de Jong’s transfer process was exhausting. When Erik ten Hag came, it was widely assumed that Frenkie was his ultimate aim, and the Red Devils were desperate to sign him.
It appeared to be almost finished at times. There were also rumors about the Dutchman’s unwillingness to miss out on Champions League football (which was ironic six months later) and his girlfriend’s refusal to settle in Manchester.
As a result, the transaction never closed. Brief rumors came again this season when the transfer window opened, but a recent statement from the man himself has all but killed any possibility of him ever moving to Old Trafford.
Frenkie de Jong wants to spend his entire career with Barcelona.
In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Periodico, the 26-year-old declared his eternal love for Barcelona and stated that he wants to spend his entire life at the club.
“Barça is the club of my life,” de Jong said in an interview with El Periodico. “I want to spend my entire life here; despite the club’s financial situation last summer, I never wanted to leave.”
“I’ve been a Barcelona fan since I was a kid.” This is my fantasy club.”
This effectively kills any future conjecture about De Jong becoming a United player.
It’s apparent that the midfielder has made up his mind that, despite the widespread speculation, he wants to spend the rest of his career with Barcelona.
Instead, we’ve got a new man…
It’s a shame this is the case because de Jong appeared to be the ‘perfect’ Manchester United number eight.
Nonetheless, ten Hag has found his man in Mason Mount, who possesses many of the traits that de Jong would have brought to Old Trafford.
Mount has a lot to show this season after a difficult year in the Premier League with Chelsea last season.
De Jong’s willingness to stay at Barcelona looks a lot better now that we have our new £55 million man.
