According to Peter Schmeichel, Erik ten Hag is now poised to prioritize Harry Maguire following the defender’s impressive display at Fulham.

The Red Devils secured a crucial win at Craven Cottage, thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ stoppage-time heroics.

This victory followed two consecutive 3-0 defeats at Old Trafford, and it demanded a resolute defensive effort, with Maguire forming a partnership with Jonny Evans at the back.

Maguire had faced a challenging period under Ten Hag, who had quickly sidelined the English star in favor of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

However, injuries to the preferred duo have provided Maguire with another opportunity, and the 30-year-old has exceeded expectations.

In Schmeichel’s view, “The standout player for me [on Saturday] was Harry Maguire. He was outstanding, omnipresent, and played a pivotal role.

Considering the adversity and criticism he’s faced, and how he’s turned it around, every coach will now prioritize him.

His performance was fantastic, and without him, I can’t see how Manchester United would have won.”

Maguire had been sidelined after losing the United captaincy earlier in the summer, a situation that appeared to mark the end of his time with the club. West Ham had come close to signing him, but Maguire declined the move.

His patience has paid off, and the former Leicester City player has been a consistent presence in United’s last four league matches, three of which they have won.

His performance at Craven Cottage garnered praise from his manager, hinting that Maguire may remain a key figure in the team.

Ten Hag commented, “He played an enormous, significant role in the game. It was a top-notch performance.

He displayed leadership and excelled both defensively and in possession. I’m extremely pleased with Harry’s performance.”

Maguire recently defended his track record at Manchester United, emphasizing that when called upon, he has consistently delivered, with a high win percentage in the games he has played.

He stated, “If you examine my last 15-20 starts for both club and country, I can confidently say that I’m content with my performances.

My record under this manager speaks for itself. While I may not have started as many matches as I’d prefer, my win percentage in the games I’ve played is remarkably high.”
