Finally – Manchester United defender Harry Maguire reveals the truth behind failed West Ham move

During the summer transfer window, Manchester United considered the possibility of selling Harry Maguire, but he ultimately stayed with the club.

Maguire has refuted the suggestion that he rejected a move to West Ham during the same transfer window because he deemed them too small a club for his stature.

Despite the option to join David Moyes’ side at the conclusion of the previous season, the 30-year-old opted to remain at Manchester United, determined to compete for his place and rejuvenate his career at the club.

Under the management of Erik ten Hag, Maguire has experienced a decrease in playing time and has appeared in only four of the team’s 11 matches this season, even competing with veteran Jonny Evans for a place on the bench.

His impressive individual performance against Brentford over the weekend highlighted his value, potentially earning him a continued spot in the starting lineup as United prepares to face Sheffield United, Maguire’s former club, next week.

While his lack of club-level minutes hasn’t cost him his place in the national team, Maguire may contemplate a move to secure regular playing time in the upcoming year.

When asked about the failed transfer to West Ham, the United defender clarified during a press conference, “Consistent playing time is of great importance to me, as it has been throughout my career.

“The opportunity to move to West Ham wasn’t effectively negotiated between both clubs and me. So, it wasn’t solely my decision to say, ‘yes, I’m going.’

“Because the two clubs and I didn’t come to an agreement, the actual opportunity didn’t materialize, as we didn’t progress far enough in the discussions.

“But West Ham is undeniably a prominent club. However, as I mentioned, my primary focus remains on Manchester United. I am determined to compete for my spot, even though consistent playing time is indeed crucial to me.”
